The TUGEMI project is a multidisciplinary framework designed to characterize, quantify, and optimize tugboat emissions in port environments. By combining interviews with key stakeholders, consumption and emissions measurement campaigns, AIS data analysis, and maneuver simulation, the project identifies operational strategies to reduce environmental impact: optimizing free-sailing speed, improving tugboat assignment and logistical planning to reduce waiting times, implementing engine power limitation (EPL) as a transitional measure, and providing specific training for captains on efficient and sustainable practices. This approach provides port authorities and tugboat operators with evidence-based tools to reduce unnecessary engine loads and mitigate local air pollution.
