Ship Theory Questions
Follow up questions done at the beginning of class
Teacher's name: Marcel·la Castells Sanabra
Timing: Continued
Methodology: Monitoring activities
Class-group size: >30 students
Level of studies: Degree
Degree, semester within the degree and subject: Degree in Nautical and Maritime Transport, Q3, Ship Theory.
Possible adaptation of the activity to other subjects: Easily extrapolated to other subjects
Activity Description:
Based on student surveys and personal interviews carried out as part of the ASAP-UPC Learning Galaxy project, two main reasons for the lack of attendance in the classroom were detected: work reasons and the pace of the subject. As for the pace of the subject, it is difficult to change it, since the pace is marked by the syllabus and content that must be taught during the semester. Therefore, the main objective of this activity is that all students can follow the pace of the course and detect if anyone gets lost.
Quizzes are designed that will be carried out before the start of class with the syllabus learned the previous week to resolve doubts about the concepts that have not been assimilated (this activity is carried out through kahoot, mentimeter or similar applications).
Activity evaluation system and impact on the evaluation of the subject:
Not evaluated.
Promotion of attendance in the classroom:
Although this activity is not assessable, passing the questionnaire in the classroom increases attendance in the classroom (the same effect as collecting attendance in the classroom)..
Evidence of student assessment:
There's no evidence.
Proportion of hours dedicated by the teaching staff to the hours dedicated by the students:
The calculation is teacher hours / student hours. Faculty hours include preparation, execution and evaluation. Studentship hours include both in-classroom and out-of-classroom work.
The hours dedicated by the teachers were basically at the time of preparing the questionnaires. Once prepared, I think the ratio is 1/3.
Recommendation for colleagues when implementing this activity:
It is an easy activity to implement and encourages students to feel the need to prepare for the subject. A bit chaotic when the group is very large.
