Transports
Exercises in the classroom with the support of the teaching staff and solution published in Atenea.
Teacher's name: Tània de los Santos
Timing: Transformation of the entire subject
Methodology: Exercises in the classroom
Class-group size: Between 15 and 30 students
Level of studies: Master's
Degree, semester within the degree and subject: MUEI, Q2, Transport
Possible adaptation of the activity to other subjects: Easily extrapolated to other subjects
Description of the activity:
The classes in the subject of Transport have been scheduled in sessions of two hours per week for theory and exercises. The two hours are organized in a first part of between 45 minutes and 1 hour where the theoretical introduction of the subject is made and an example is solved. In the remaining hour, the students solve the exercises proposed in the class material independently or, if they wish, in collaboration with their classmates. Doubts are resolved on an individual basis by the teacher in the classroom.
When all the groups in the subject have finished the topic, the resolution of the proposed exercises is posted on the campus.
Activity evaluation system and impact on the evaluation of the subject:
There is no specific assessment within the subject.
Promotion of attendance in the classroom:
The procedure was proposed as a way to enhance student learning as it favors the resolution of doubts when they appear individually and also allows the concepts presented in the same session to be consolidated.
We believe that it promotes presence in the classroom even though in the master's degree attendance is very much conditioned by the student's time availability.
Evidence of student assessment:
The students value the methodology positively, as is evident in the comments in the surveys and in the comments in the classroom. They consider that it helps them in learning the subject.
Proportion of hours dedicated by the teaching staff to the hours dedicated by the students:
The calculation is teacher hours / student hours. Faculty hours include preparation, execution and evaluation. Studentship hours include both in-classroom and out-of-classroom work.
It is an activity that does not require preparation too different from the preparation of a more passive class by the students. The difficulty is the management within the classroom by the teaching staff to attend to doubts in the event that the group is more than 30 people, which has sometimes happened. In any case, it must be said that the cooperative work between the students means that doubts are resolved between them.
Recommendation for colleagues when implementing this activity:
It is important to detect students with more difficulty and suggest that they work collaboratively with other classmates. Managing dedicated time for each person is important.
